“Talk about setting the bar!” – CS

Inspired by the work of Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce, this series of “digital daguerreotypes” was created to mimic the fragile quality and three-dimensional look of photographs made during the early 19th century. My portraits consist of a four-by-five inch sheet of Plexiglas that has been sanded and silver-leafed on one side. The portrait is then transferred to the blank side by use of the DASS transfer process. The resulting product is a reflective black-and-white photograph with the visual depth and physical weight of an antique daguerreotype or ambrotype.

‘To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms that give that event its proper expression.’
